Top 10 point guards in the NBA (2023-2024)

Top 10 Point Guards in the NBA

When people talk about the game of basketball, I instantly think of the players who anchor the offense and control the pace of the game. Some might argue that this is the most important out of the five positions in Basketball - The point guard.

As the 2023-2024 seasons ceases, the point guard position has emerged to be one of the most stacked positions with talent all around the league.

But some players have come out as more effective and better than the others.

Here are the top 10 point guards in the league right now -

1. Luka Doncic

35 PPG 8 REB 9 AST

The 24 year Slovenian has proved time to time that he is not only the best point guard in the league but also one of the best players in the NBA.
Luka also averaged his career high in 3 point field goals made while shooting a commendable 38% from behind the arc. Luka has consistently been putting up historical stat lines his whole career and this year was no exception since he just put up an unbelievable stateline of 73 Points 10 Rebound and 7 Assists. Luka also clinched the scoring title with a bizarre 35 PPG and 3rd in triple doubles behind Nikola Jokic and Domantas Sabonis.

2. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander

31 PPG 5 REB 6 AST
SGA ended the regular season with a back-to-back 30+ PPG year. The young Canadian guard has led the OKC thunders to the number one record in the loaded Western Conference. Shai also averaged 54% from the field and leads the league in steals with 2 per game. This year he also led the league with the highest amount of 30 points or more games with 51 of those.

3. Jalen Brunson

28 PPG 3 REB 6 AST

Jalen Brunson has proved himself as one of the most talented guards in the NBA, in the past 2 seasons where he has completely turned around a 11th seeded Knicks team to a serious play-off contender clinching the 2nd spot in the Eastern conference. He is one of the most efficient scorers in the NBA who can operate on all 3 levels while also shooting 40% from deep. He is also one of the few players who elevate their games in the post season.

4. Stephen Curry

26 PPG 4 REB 5 AST

The reigning clutch player of the year checks in as the 4th best PG in the NBA. Despite being 36, Chef curry leads the NBA in 3pt FGM with 357 with a commendable 40% 3 point field goal percentage. This season Stephen Curry and the Warriors barely clinched the 10th seed in the west with 46 wins however  the door to their playoff success was closed by the Sacramento Kings in the play-in tournament. Never the less Curry did not fail to seal himself as one of the most impactful guards in the league this season.

5. Tyrese Haliburton

 20.1 PPG 11 AST  4 REB

Tyrese Haliburton enters the list as the 5th best PG in the NBA. Tyrese embodies the term point guard with his surreal capability of dishing out assists to his teammates, Haliburton led the league in total assists. This season he put up an impressive 20 PPG on high efficiency from all 3 levels. Tyrese also showed himself capable of leading his teaming to the playoffs.

6.  Tyrese Maxey

  26 PPG 6 AST 3 REB

The reigning MIPOY Tyrese Maxey is coming of a nothing short of a spectacular season where he proved himself as one of the best young studs in the league. The stage where Maxey really showed his true potential was game 5 of Eastern Conference round 1 against Knicks, where he put up a staggering 46 PTS & 9 AST (7 3PM made), while scoring a historic 7 Points in 17 seconds. Next season I would expect Tyrese to further take another leap and establish himself as a top 10 player in the league.

7. De'Aaron Fox

26.6 PPG  5 AST 4 REB

This season De'Aaron fox established himself as one of the top tier guards in the NBA with his absurd scoring skills as he finished the year 9th in total points scored this season out of all players. Fox is arguably the fastest player in the NBA currently. This allows him to blow past defenders with ease. Swipa made contributions on the defensive end as well, as he tied SGA for the number 1 spot in steals per game with an average of 2 STLs. Many fans are considering De'Aaron to be the biggest snub in the all star game alongside his teammate Domantas Sabonis.

8.  Trae Young

26 PPG 10 AST 3 REB

One of the best passers in the league, Trae Young finished the season with a career high in Assists per game and steals per game with 10.8 and 1.3. This year Young made the 3rd All star team selection of his career. He continued to score at a high level averaging near 26 PPG with a respectable 37% efficiency from deep. Despite having great statistics and numbers, his team's lack of regular season or playoff success this year, led him to securing the 8th spot on this list.

9. Damian Lillard

24 PPG 7 AST 3 REB

Although Dame had a rough season, the 11 year veteran managed to make his 8th All star team as a starter this season while securing the All star game MVP as well. Additionally, even though a lot of aspects of his game saw a visible degrade, Lillard averaged a solid 24 PPG shooting 35% from 3 and a 92% Free throw percentage. Dame Dolla yet again proved his scoring abilities in the playoffs as he averaged an extraordinary 31 PPG alongside 41% from 3 and 97% from the free throw line. However an Achillies injury prevented Milwaukee from a deep playoff run.

10. Jamal Murray -

21 PPG 6 AST 4 REB

The Former NBA champion is coming off the best season of his career so far, as he averaged a career high 21 PPG on an insane 42% 3pt field goal efficiency and 48% from the field. Murray also averaged 6.5 dimes a game which is also a career high. However the Minnesota Timberwolves knocked out the  nuggets in the second round of the playoffs after an unpleasant performance from Murray where he averaged 18 PPG on shooting splits of 40 and 33 from the field and 3pt.

Here are some honorable mentions, who just missed the cut but had a great regular season or due to injuries.

Darius Garland (Cleveland Cavaliers)

Lamelo Ball (Charlotte Hornets) - Injured

Ja Morant (Memphis Grizzlies) - Injured

So mentioned above was a list of who I believe are the top 10 best point guards in the NBA. It is important to understand that this is only my opinion and is a list compiled by myself, according to my understanding of the game and how different players performed this season.

Let me know if you agree with this ranking or you would like to add a player in this list or if I forgot a player.
